Chapter 7: Wireless Networking

I have mentioned before that I have taken both the network security class and the networking and communications class, so some of the material covered was already familiar to me. However, I did learn some additional things in those modules, such as what MIFI and Muni Wi-Fi is. I found it interesting to learn about the evolution of wireless networks. I already knew that 1G, 2G, 3G, 4G, and 5G networks existed, but I did not know about 2.5G and 3.5G. It’s incredible to see how these technologies have changed over time and learning about what each network could support or transmit.

One concept that I found interesting was the wireless mesh network. These networks are convenient because the nodes do not rely on each other. This means that if one node goes down, it does not affect the entire network. It is also useful for monitoring different sections of a location.

I also learned about wireless encryption methods like WEP and WPA. However, if I were to set up a network, I would go with a wired network rather than a wireless one. I feel that there are still more security risks with those two encryption methods than with wired networks. However, I did appreciate having the security checklist for when you are installing a wireless router or access point. The only step I have taken on my home network is changing the default login and password, but I might consider doing the other steps listed as well.

The section I found the most interesting was the security problems for Bluetooth-enabled devices. I had never heard of bluejacking, bluesnarfing, or bluebugging before. I did not know that there was a possibility for someone to access your device. However, since the vulnerabilities have been fixed, if you regularly update your device, I feel these should not be an issue anymore.
