Chapter 2: Basic Commuication on the Internet

In Chapter 2, there was a lot of information I already knew, either from experience or from previous classes. In multiple courses, we have covered internet protocols, including those listed, such as SMTP and POP, so I was already familiar with them. The only one I did not know about was MIME, which covers graphics and sounds.

I have had an email account since I was about 8 years old, so I am extremely comfortable navigating Gmail. Before I had any social media, I used to email my friends to stay in touch with them. While I have not been using Outlook for long, I have grown comfortable using it as well. I am also familiar with email etiquette because it was taught and reinforced throughout my middle and high school years.

However, even though I have used Gmail for a long time, I did not know you could create a label to group multiple people together. I will keep this in mind if I ever need to send messages to the same group frequently, because it seems like a much more organized way. I also did not know that Google Contacts existed, which surprises me considering how long I have had a Gmail account. Although I do not currently email people often enough to need saved contacts.

One part of the chapter that really interested me was learning that viruses have a pattern, signature, or definition. I found that fascinating because I enjoy learning about security and knowing how to protect against malware and viruses is a key component. I also enjoyed learning about the CAN-SPAM Act, not only because I found the name creative and funny, but also because of its intention. Unfortunately, it did not have much success. Spam is still a big issue for me, especially since I get so much of it on accounts I have had for years.
