Chapter 5: User-Generated Content on the Internet
A lot of the information in the second half of Chapter 5 was already familiar to me. It is common for someone my age to have multiple social media accounts. In fact, it is rare if you do not, given how prevalent they are in our society today. Because of this, I am already aware of the possible downsides to using social media and how to protect myself. Additionally, these are things that you hear a lot, such as the importance of being careful about what you post because your job or future employer could potentially view your posts. Since I have grown up with the Internet, I am already familiar with different websites and their features, such as YouTube and Shutterfly.
I was surprised to learn that Craigslist has been around for so long. Typically, websites that were created a long time ago are already retired and are no longer used. However, I am not sure how much longer Craigslist will last, especially with the rise of new apps and websites where you can sell your things, such as Mercari and Facebook Marketplace.
I also learned about push and pull communication. While I was familiar with the concepts, I did not know that those were the formal terms for them. I had a realization when I read about push technology, because now it makes sense why you can enable push notifications, and why they are named that. I was also surprised to learn about Web 2.0 and how it describes the shift in how people use the internet today. Although it is not considered a “new” internet, it makes a lot of sense to refer to it as an updated version, considering how much things have changed. Finally, I found the section about APIs interesting. They are extremely useful for people creating websites, as they allow you to integrate features and services that people are already familiar with, such as social media logins, payment processing, or maps. Plus, APIs can save time and effort since they let you use existing services and tools, rather than having to develop those features from scratch yourself.
